re: Computer geekness wrt storage

So, Cauthon and I got off on a bit of a tangent last night in the tank channel, so thought I'd actually get around to posting some the articles that I was quoting. First, for the OCZ core SSDs, you can see a lot of the 'issues' being discussed in their support forums, and then this article has some actual useful benchmarks - http://blog.laptopmag.com/in-depth-with-the-ocz-core-series-low-cost-ssd

Really, how many articles that paint the core SSD as dominating the competition only run synthetic benchmarks and then controlled application load benchmarks? I don't think any of the other 'reviews' I'd seen even bothered doing a file copy test... Whereas this one does, and points out the true weakness of these drives - soon as you have both reads and writes occurring at the same time their performance nosedives. I mean, it's losing out to a 5.4k RPM notebook drive...

Now, the really interesting thing with SSDs are the not yet released products from Samsung and Intel, both of which supposedly will break 200 MB/s reads. I dunno about the Samsung, but I'm kinda wondering if we'll get more info on the Intel ones at IDF in two weeks. Oh yeah, and here's an interesting pdf of the presentation made at the spring IDF earlier this year - https://intel.wingateweb.com/SHchina/published/MASS001/SP08_MASS001_101r_eng.pdf

Now, as for velociraptors, yeah, I know they don't list the 80 GB version, but if you do a search for it you'll find it. Dell has them as an option for the optiplex 755 systems, as confirmed by this thread - http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1316110

Right now, I just wanna know when Intel's going to get around to releasing those purrdy performance SSD, not to mention prices/if there's going to be an employee discount

So, boo hiss for the Intel SSD being an MSRP of $600 for 80 GB. At least the performance hits the mark. I was rather hopeful that pricing would be such to make massive inroads into the market rather than insane profit margins (I wouldn't be surprised if it's $300-$400 of profit per drive sold.)

Anyway, now to wait and see if they get put up on the employee purchase program... twisted
